For those who love history and wish to truly immerse themselves in the past, or for tourists who desire an enlightening experience when visiting different countries and cultures, exploring destinations through a time-honored perspective is an excellent idea. In addition to giving you a look into the history of a country, it also provides an important understanding of its growth process and shows what made it unique. Here are some top city tours from all over the world that will assist in making the past come alive by showcasing beautiful art, architecture, and customs:

    Table of Contents

    • Rome, Italy
    • Athens, Greece
    • AlUla, Saudi Arabia
    • Petra, Jordan
    • Fez, Morocco
    • Choquequirao, Peru
    • Varanasi, India
    • Kyoto, Japan

    Rome, Italy

Imbued with over three millennia of colorful history, Rome is the perfect destination for historical immersion, demonstrating the ups and downs of an iconic empire. The city’s well-kept structures are reminders of its past times, from the gladiatorial games in the Colosseum to political discussions at the Roman Forum. In the middle of Renaissance palazzos and medieval churches, you can see Pantheon’s great dome and Trevi Fountain with its beautiful Baroque background in Rome’s city center. Rome also houses Capitoline Hill and the Vatican, places that give a taste of famous old times while showing off today’s vibrant life.

    Athens, Greece

Having signs of habitation since 3000 BC, Athens is among the earliest cities globally and famous as the core of Western civilization. Numerous historical monuments still stand in this city such as the Acropolis Citadel and Temple of Athena, including ruins from the Parthenon and the Ancient Agora marketplace. While strolling through Athens’s streets made up entirely of cobblestones while passing magnificent neoclassical structures, one cannot help but observe how every nook reflects its past days. If you desire to go to the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic games were held, or observe the surprisingly well-preserved remains at UNESCO site Delphi, Athens’ heritage will satisfy your exploratory passion.

    AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Although the city has been inhabited since the 6th century BC, the area has only recently opened up to global travelers and is simply waiting to be explored. The best way to experience AlUla is through the Living Museum which demonstrates over 200,000 years of history. The monumental stone structures, fascinating rock art, and Lower and Middle Palaeolithic stone tools found here are excellent examples of the lives of prehistoric civilizations. For history lovers looking for artistic experiences, this destination is also home to Maraya, a concert venue and the world’s largest mirrored building, along with Madrasat Aldrirah arts hub, where you can spot local artisans practicing their craft for a unique cultural immersion experience.

    Petra, Jordan

Both a New World Wonder and a UNESCO Heritage Site, Petra has survived for over two millennia. Although the name means “rock” in ancient Greek, this destination has more to offer past the stunning stone formations and ruins. Formerly a refuge for the Nabataean Arabian kingdom, the Rose City was carved straight into the blush sandstone valley, with the rock-cut construction and the inventive water systems still being preserved over 2,000 years later. After exploring Petra, it’s also a good idea to partake in the ancient Jordanian tradition: going on a safari through the Valley of the Moon (Wadi Rum), a breathtaking red-rock desert home to petroglyphs from the Stone Age.

    Fez, Morocco

Established in the 8th century and representing one of the largest pedestrian urban areas in the world, Fez perfectly captures Morocco’s age-old soul. In this city, medieval medinas unfold behind tall walls into a charming labyrinth of souks and alleys adorned with carved cedarwood, leather bags, and silk robes. Elaborate 14th-century madrasas, ornate mosques, pigmented tanneries, and a historic university still operate in these dusty streets. As the capital of the Idrisid and Marinid dynasties, Fez is embellished with stunning architecture including the Bou Inania Madrasa. As you walk through these warrens, passing murmuring fountains and aromatic spice sacks, you will undoubtedly feel the enduring allure of Old Morocco.

    Choquequirao, Peru

As a genuine place for adventure-seekers, Choquequirao is located in the Peruvian Andes at a height of about 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level. This archaeological site contains Inca temples, baths, and houses along with farming terraces that were built around the 15th century AD. It should be noted that this place is more remote and challenging to reach than its famous counterpart Machu Picchu. To reach Choquequirao, you have to do a tough but fulfilling four-day trek. If this seems too ambitious, there is also an eight-day trip that includes Machu Picchu.

    Varanasi, India

Situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges River, Varanasi (also known as Benares) is a sacred city in India housing cremation sites imperative to the funeral rituals meant to break the reincarnation cycle. By certain accounts, it is also one of the world’s oldest perpetually inhabited cities. Varanasi is thought to be the ideal place for experiencing fascinating Hindu traditions first-hand, whether you inspect ghats (ancient cremation grounds), visit holy bathing sites, or go see riverfront temples. Outside the city, Sarnath is also an interesting destination, representing the location where Buddhists believe the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama gave his first address around 2,500 years ago.

    Kyoto, Japan

For a stroll back in time, visit the old wooden townhouses (machiya) of Kyoto. Being the capital of Japan for over a millennium, this city quickly grew into a culture and trade epicenter, leaving thousands of gardens, shrines, and temples gracing the modern city landscape. Historic sites such as the serene Philosopher’s Path and the majestic Golden Pavilion represent the lasting religious heritage, with the famous geisha still entertaining in the Gion district. Past the canalside alleys paved in stone and central avenues lined with cherry trees, 8th-century castle fossils and imperial villas endure alongside avant-garde culture. Kyoto is Japan’s cultural sanctuary, presenting the perfect blend of tradition, innovation, and tranquil natural surroundings.

In conclusion, our beautiful world is filled with captivating historic destinations that awe with their grandeur as much as their endurance. Uncover ancient relics, marvel at splendid structures, and enjoy unique vantage points in these cities nearly untouched by time.
