Types of Hernias and Their Treatment

A hernia is a condition where a part of an organ or tissue pushes through an opening or a weak area in the muscle or fibrous tissue. Hernias can develop in any part of the body and can lead to pain, discomfort and other complications if not treated. To effectively manage hernias, you must be familiar with the various types of hernias and the available treatment procedures. Read the article to find out!

    • Inguinal Hernia

This kind of hernia is called inguinal hernia and it affects the groin region. It occurs when a portion of the intestine or abdominal tissue herniates through a defect in the abdominal wall near the inguinal canal. There are two types of inguinal hernias: indirect and direct, based on the position of the hernia.

Treatment: Inguinal hernias may need surgery, especially if they are painful or uncomfortable. The procedure involves folding the tissue back into the abdomen and using mesh or stitches to reinforce the damaged region.

    • Femoral Hernia

A femoral hernia takes place when the abdominal tissue or part of the intestine pushes through the femoral canal which is located near the groin. This type of hernia is more prevalent in females and is often not easily noticeable because of its position.

Treatment: Femoral hernias like inguinal hernias are best treated by surgical intervention to avoid complications like bowel obstruction or strangulation.

    • Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical hernias are a condition in which a portion of the intestine or abdominal tissue bulges out through the abdominal wall close to the belly button. They are typically seen in newborns but can also affect individuals with an enlarged abdomen due to factors such as obesity, pregnancy, or chronic coughing.

Treatment: In infants, umbilical hernias usually close spontaneously by two or three years of age. In adults, surgery may be suggested particularly if the hernia is big or if it is causing discomfort.

    • Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia is a condition in which a portion of the stomach moves through the hiatus, which is a hole in the muscle that divides the abdomen from the chest. This type of hernia can lead to heartburn, reflux and difficulties in swallowing.

Treatment: Small hiatal hernias do not need to be treated if they are asymptomatic. For more complicated or painful hernias, changes in diet and physical activity, and medication may be advised. In very rare cases, the condition may require surgery intervention. Details of the surgery such as the hernia operation cost in Pakistan can be obtained from online sources or general surgeons specializing in the procedure.

    • Incisional Hernia

Incisional hernias are a type of hernia that appears at the region of the previous surgery on the abdominal wall. They may occur several years after the primary surgery has been done.

Treatment: The course of action may involve doing nothing, using a hernia truss or binder, or surgery to strengthen the weak spot in the muscle.

    • Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

Congenital diaphragmatic hernias are a type of birth defect that result from the improper formation of the diaphragm, a muscle that separates the abdominal and chest cavities. This leads to the displacement of the abdominal organs into the chest cavity.

Treatment: Congenital diaphragmatic hernias need to be surgically corrected as soon as possible after birth to relocate the organs and fix the diaphragm.

    Treatment Options

Although minor and asymptomatic hernias can be managed conservatively, the majority of hernias need to be addressed surgically to avoid complications like bowel obstruction or strangulation. Surgical approaches can be either open surgery or endoscopic surgery depending on the type and complexity of the hernia.

    Prevention and Management

There are some hernias that cannot be prevented, but it is possible to lower the chances of getting certain kinds of hernias by losing weight, not overexerting oneself or lifting heavy objects, and stopping smoking. It is important that if you have been diagnosed with a hernia, you should follow the advice given by your health care provider to avoid complications and promote healing. To get a hernia operation in Karachi consult with a general surgeon today.
