European soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. The Champions League is a soccer competition organized by the UEFA between the top clubs in Europe which has millions of fans worldwide. In the 2024/2025 season, the league will follow a new format, and the most significant change has been made to the group stage. This new format will offer more entertainment with fewer games between eliminated sides. The next Champions League phase will run from September 2024 to January 2025.
Change to new format
The present group stage includes 32 participants in eight groups of four. This will change in 2024, and 36 clubs will participate in a single league competition. This will allow four more teams to compete against Europe’s best clubs. Three points for a win and one point for a draw is still the scoring method.
In the past, teams had to play three opponents twice, both at home and away. Now, teams will have to play eight matches against opponents in the new league phase that replaces the group stage system. Half the matches will take place at home and half away. This new system is being called the ‘Swiss System.’
There will be four seeding pots to decide who plays who. Each team will play two opponents from each pot. They will play one match against each opponent at home and one away.
Who gets the additional spots? The top-performing leagues in Europe from the previous season will get two extra spots. The other two places will go to the third-placed team in the league ranked fifth by UEFA.
The Champions League is one of the sports that receive the most bets worldwide. Americans also enjoy betting on European soccer, and most sportsbooks in the U.S. offer odds on the sport. Many states have legalized online sports betting, and Americans can enjoy betting in Pennsylvania and many other places.
Championships League knockout phase
The eight sides that come out tops in the league will qualify for the round of 16. Teams that come in 9-24th place will go into a play-off round, and the top teams will also make it to round 16. Teams ranking from 25-36 will drop out of the Champions League.
This is when the knockout format fans are familiar with comes back. The round of 16, quarterfinals, and semi-finals occur and lead up to the final, where two opponents compete against one another to become the champions.
How will the changes benefit fans?
The travel blogs of some soccer fans are likely to reflect the excitement of watching more top European matches. Each team will play other teams of a similar competitive caliber in the league phase. Every single game will count and have the potential of changing the position of a team. Even winning the very last game in the league phase could result in qualifying automatically for round 16. In theory, these changes will eliminate some of the less meaningful games.
How will changes benefit the European game?
The changes will secure the future of European soccer at each level and encourage open competition. They will also sustain domestic leagues and allow more teams, coaches, and players to compete in high-level competitions. Four new team slots with more UCL qualification berths are likely to bring in a larger viewership and more revenue.
The Europa League and the Conference League will have much the same format as the New Champions League, but the Conference League will have six teams per group.
FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is another event soccer fans look forward to. It will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The format for this event will also change, and fans can look forward to watching 104 games instead of the original 80.
