For caretakers of those with very limited mobility, transfers to and from the patient’s wheelchair can be especially challenging. Your loved one may not be able to provide any help or bear any of their own weight, and moving a fully grown adult without some form of assistance is not only difficult, but potentially dangerous. A ceiling lift can provide caregivers and patients alike with a tool that makes transfers safer, smoother, and easier. Keep reading to learn how to perform a transfer using a ceiling lift.

    Preparing the Space

First, take a few minutes to ensure the space around your loved one is secure. This includes positioning the wheelchair near the bed and locking it in place so it doesn’t roll. You should also move any obstacles that can get in the way of a smooth transfer, like blankets that might be wrapped around their legs. Make sure the lift is working properly and the sling is in good condition.

    Positioning the Sling

There are a variety of sling types available, so make sure you’re choosing the right one for your purpose before attaching it. Then, help your loved one roll onto one side and position the sling underneath them, ensuring it’s centered under them. Roll them back onto their back, and pull the sling out from the opposite side. Adjust the position of the sling as needed for even support.

    Attaching the Sling

Once the sling is securely under your family member, align the ceiling lift attachment points with the sling’s loops. Attach the loops to the lift’s hooks or clips, ensuring it’s positioned properly. Double-check all connections to ensure they’re secure before moving on to the next step.

    Lifting the Individual

With the sling properly secured, activate the ceiling lift and raise your loved one a few inches off the bed. Take a moment to check for comfort and stability, then continue lifting them until they’re at an appropriate height for the transfer.

    Moving to the Wheelchair

Next, carefully guide the ceiling lift along its track to where the wheelchair is locked in place. Position the individual over the seat, then slowly lower the lift until they are seated securely. You can then unclip the sling from the ceiling lift and remove it from underneath your loved one. Adjust the wheelchair as needed for their comfort and safety before unlocking its position.

By using the best ceiling lifts for sale on the market, you can perform smooth transfers in a matter of minutes, with no strain on your back and no risk to your loved one.
